Follow up from the letter of Neil Turner’s mother

So far Croydon Council leaders Jon Rouse and Mike Fisher and London Mayor Boris Johnson have not responded to the letter of the mother of killed cyclist Neil Turner. She did however receive a phone call from Steve O Connell, Croydon and Sutton GLA member who promised to do anything he could. I have responded to Steve with the below E-mail

Hi Steve,

I understand that you’ve been in touch by phone with the mother of Neil Turner, the cyclist killed on Mitcham Road last month and said that you ‘would do all you could’. At the Croydon Cycling Campaign we have many ideas for improving Mitcham Road. This road is a key part of the London Cycle Network and passes through a residential area outside a school. This makes that section of the road an ideal candidate to have a 20mph limit put in place. The road could also be redesigned to make it safe for even the very young or very old to use. For example, you could remove car parking in order to to put in a cycle path with a solid white line. If removing parking is unacceptable, the parking could be rotated to remove the dangerous ‘door zones’ allowing that space to be brough back into use for cyclists. If you’re struggling to visualise this, there are some pictures on our website of how this section of road could look: http://croydoncyclists.org.uk/how-mitcham-road-could-look/ Or perhaps you could redesign the road more like Skinner Street in Clerkenwell? http://iamnotacyclist.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/skinner-street.html

Please do let me know your thoughts on these ideas or if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Kristian Gregory
