Cyclist Neil Turner was killed on Mitcham Road on 10 July 2012.
On 25 July, Croydon Cycling Campaign placed a ghost bike close to site of the crash at a memorial ceremony attended by Neil’s family, local cyclists, former British cycling star and owner of De Ver Cycles Maurice Burton and family and Amy Aeron-Thomas and Sara Dowling from Roadpeace
Kristian summed up the feelings of those assembled when he said that what had happened was not acceptable, and called for a 20mph limit to be put in place without delay.
Neil’s mother said a few words about her son, and it was evident that the family have been put through real emotional trauma following their tragic loss.
Those in attendance were then invited forward to add the final coat of paint to the ghost bike.
RIP neil, you will always be remembered.
Thank you for holding this event and publishing this report. Neil was a member of our trade union, RMT, and a Northern Line Tube driver based at Morden depot. I never met Neil myself, but RMT members at Morden are devastated by his death, and to a person speak of him as a great friend and genuinely lovely guy.
tragic news of neil met him at a family wedding a couple of years back r i p neil love to your family
Sorry to see this. I’ve been trying to find out what happened here as I cycle past this spot most weeks but first noticed the bike when I came back from a long holiday. I was hit on the other side of the road in February, thankfully not badly. It’s a terrible stretch of road. RIP Neil
Karl, sorry to hear about your collision, are you happy to share more details about what happened? If so it may be useful in our discussions with the council.
