For info all AMs also received a letter from LCC on their first day at their desks. The text was as follows:

Many congratulations from the London Cycling Campaign for your election success. We offer you our best wishes for your forthcoming term as a member of the London Assembly.

We are sure you will be aware of the prominent role the issue of cycling played in the London elections, especially the contest for mayor. The elections brought into focus widespread public and media concern that not enough has yet been done to improve safety for cycling. We were therefore delighted that all the main mayoral candidates, including the re-elected Mayor Boris Johnson, declared their full commitment to meeting the demands of LCC’s Love London, Go Dutch campaign. These are to make London’s streets as safe and inviting for cycling as they are in Holland, with the following actions to be undertaken over the next four years:

» Show how we can priorities people over motor vehicles in urban design and transport planning by implementing three flagship Go Dutch developments on major streets and/or locations.

» Design streets that people feel safe and want to cycle in by ensuring all planned developments on the main roads controlled by TfL are done to Go Dutch standards, especially junctions.

» Share road space more equally amongst all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists by making sure the Cycling Superhighways programme is completed to Go Dutch standards.

40,000 people signed the Love London, Go Dutch petition – the largest of its kind ever seen in the UK; and 10,000 people (including the main mayoral candidates or their representatives) joined the Love London, Go Dutch Big Ride on 28th April – the biggest cycle campaign even in the UK to date. Collectively this represents a huge mandate for the Mayor to make good his promise to deliver on the above, and for members of the Assembly – whatever their party – to hold him to account.

Good luck with your tenure in office. We hope cycling can count on your support, and we look forward to working with you.

Good ‘un – and something that I (for one) will cut and paste and send to my London Assembly member, asking him to ensure Boris delivers on cycling
